Pigeon Lady, 2007
40cm wide x 100 cm tall, Mixed Media on Linen

She came from the country to the city to learn about the world. To find a path to being someone important but she was a naïve young woman and had to live in the poor side of town in the upstairs apartment of a broken down old prostitute house now a Russian orthodox sandwich shop while earning her education. Behind her live a Vietnam vet who drank too much and love his wife who loved her heroin, next to them was a crazy old father of a cop with chickens and cats filling his apartment and on the corners opposite was a house full of transvestite prostitutes who constantly got thrown from the passing cars. All of them had a big laugh one later summer afternoon as the blond girl ran out into the busy intersection to save a pigeon that was injured by an old car racing by. But as the black ladies laughed looking on with their glazed over eyes she covered the bird and took her up to her roof top apartment. Made a bed in an old cardboard box, with a hand full of seeds and water in an old tea cup she tried to save the bird. She tried to save her but the pigeon died anyways. When she brought the box out to find a grave and walked down the street the vets, prostitutes, broken down old men all came out one be one and patted her on the back. From that day on the hole street looked out for her, taught her the ways and loved her. Invited her over for macaroni dinners and malt digestives and always kept a watchful eye out for her. Some say you could she the bird on her shoulder afterwards looking over her as well.
